I heard this on NPR and wanted to share it with all the moms/people I know. After two
years of independent scientists raising red flags about the chemical, the
government/F.D.A. FINALLY admitted last week that BPA in plastics “should be
avoided”. (another example of how just because something is thought to be “safe”
today doesn’t mean it really is, so as parents we NEED to do our own research
and follow our own gut instincts!)
BPA (in baby bottles, sippy cups, many plastics) has been found by scientists to
cause heart disease, affect the reproductive systems and affect brain function, among other things.
Unfortunately, stores will still be selling their BPA-containing merchandise for
the next two years, so YOU have to know what to avoid. Here’s a handy little
rhyme I heard on NPR to help you remember which plastics are the safe ones. Turn
the plastic merchandise over and look for the recycling sign. In it there should
be a number. That’s where the rhyme comes in: “4, 5, 1 and 2, ALL THE REST ARE
BAD FOR YOU.” Please spread the word to other consumers!!!!! I heard this on NPR, by
the author of the book “Slow Death by Rubber Duck”.
And if anyone has any advice on what to do when there IS no recycling sign,
please let me know and share it on this website. THANK YOU!
